The GIO Award is the leading Good Industrial Design (Goed Industrieel Ontwerp-GIO) Award recognizing design excellence in the Netherlands. It is characterized by the balance of various aspects as functionality, innovation, originality, respect and utility. It is an unprecedented honor for Nordeon to be awarded for one of the five special prizes for the most distinctive items. According to the jury of industrial design experts, Thor matches these criteria perfectly. They constitute: "The LED high bay luminaire Thor combines distinct design with innovation. Lighting in industrial buildings, warehouses and distribution centers face harsh environments. The smooth combination of an intelligent thermal management, a robust aluminum housing and the high-quality LED technology guarantees a very strong product."
Design & Function in balance
Thanks to the ingenious thermal management the LED high bay Thor permits air flow through the luminaire which ensures a cooling effect. Especially in high spaces with ambient temperatures of up to 50°C, this point is important because lighting without a corresponding thermal management affects the lifetime of the LED negatively. Furthermore it prevents dust deposits that can damage the thermal management of the light. Nordeon thus achieved a breakthrough in lifetime with 100.000 hours.
Product manager Johannes Haskamp expresses: "Winning the GIO award is a confirmation for a good collaboration. We teamed up with the design experts of npk design in Amsterdam and combine the robust construction for demanding conditions and breakthrough in lifetime implying an attractive aesthetical design. With the THOR we have set a milestone in the field of indoor lighting with the typical Nordeon payback time of only 2 years."
The design team of npk helps to develop a versatile lighting solution with a distinctive, state-of-the-art design. According to the managing director Wolfram Peters it is a constant challenge to understand the needs of consumers and to respond to it. “The objective was to create efficient lighting with a high lighting quality for a long lifetime. We love it to combine the latest trends and developments in the product and material range with the actual product goals,” says Peters.
